What are these white garlic looking things in the dirt?
My wife and I are new to gardening and while digging in our yard today we kept finding these white mini-onion or garlic looking things in the ground. Most of them are little ball shaped white objects that are somewhat hard but not rock solid. (you can cut into them) They are odorless for the most part. What is it?
- Seeing as how you mentioned that they are mostly odorless, my guess is that the might be Star of Bethlehem (Ornithogalum umbellatum) it belongs to the lily family but is fairly short. Without a picture is is impossible to tell and depends upon where you are in the country. Small ornamental bulbs are notorious for moving around the landscape. If it is Star of Bethlehem it should be flowering within the next month or so.
I hope this helps.
